MATING AND RAISING YOUNG

  • River otters tend to mate in March or April.
  • A litter of 1-5 young are born in February or March.
  • The otters make a den out of a beaver dam, a hollow log,
  • Or wherever they can be creative.
  • They are polygamous, so they mate with more than one partner

HIBERNATION/ MIGRATION

  • Otters do not hibernate or migrate.
  • They have two coats to keep them warm in winter.

GROUPS

  • River otters do not live in big groups. They usually live
  • with their current partner and their litter, which
  • the female lives with for about a year after the male leaves.

COMMUNICATION

  • The otters communicate by chirping,
  • chattering, and chuckling.
  • When one is frightened, it will scream a
  • hair-raising scream that can be heard
  • 2 kilometers away.
