HISTORY

  • Introduced to England in the 18th century.
  • Resulted from breeding of Arabians, Turks, and Barbs to local English mares.
  • Were the main horses used in battles, as well as in both world wars, for cavalry.

STRENGTHS

  • Referred to as "hot-blooded" horses due to their agility and spirit.
  • Known for their speed and athletic stamina.

CURRENT PURPOSE

  • Because of their speed and athletic abilities, they are usually used for racing.
  • Sometimes used for show jumping, dressage, polo, and fox hunting.

COLORS

  • Bay- tan to auburn
  • Black
  • Chestnut- red/gold yellow

  • Gray- black and white hairs
  • Roan- red/brown and white

HEIGHT

  • Average at about 16 hands.

WEIGHT

  • The average thouroughbred weighs around 1,000 pounds.

HEREDITARY PROBLEMS

  • Due to their popularity in racing, many thouroughbreds will experience pulmonary hemorrhages (bleeding lungs).
  • Low fertility and small hearts and hooves are also very common.
