School Counselor Moments

What will the role of tomorrow's
School Counselors
look like?

The traditional classroom is changing.
A lot of schools no longer have computer labs....we are now 1-1 or we have carts
We are moving away from textbooks to online books
We collaborate more through technology
Education is being flipped and becoming hands-on

So what does all of that mean for school counselors?

Some things will remain the same:

  • Academic
  • Personal/Social
  • Career
  • Juggling
We will still use the ASCA model to work with students in our programs based on the three domains

We will still have a lot on our plates and juggle a lot of different duties, situations, and people!

How we perform our jobs will change.........

It is evolving how we have to do our job!

What are some things that you did in your SC programs that you no longer do?

Copy scholarship applications? I had binders for everything? I now have a livebinder

I connect with students differently....it has to be a way that they are comfortable connecting

Connections begin with relationships

Relationships will always be the key to any effective program.

We just have to find new ways to connect with everyone because of time constraints and the changing world of communication

Build Relationships

Small Gestures Make a Big Difference
It's the little things!

Reading announcements every day to stay in touch with the daily happenings

Being visible in the halls and talking to students as they walk by

So we tried to do some little things that made a big impact

Recognition

Signing Day!
College Access and Readiness is a driving theme of our SC program.

We showcase where the students will be going to college and what they will be studying

Huge response

Can also include World of Work and where they are planning on working

Hear it from the experts

Transition Advice
Just like children get tired of hearing their parents talk to them, we have the "experts" come in and talk.

Last year's graduates come in and talk to this year's seniors

We use this year's upper classmen to talk to the 6th graders as they transition into the Jr-Sr High School

Student Meetings

with a twist!
Minute Meetings with junior high students
Senior Initial meetings
Transfer student meetings

Show Google Drive and the analytics that accompany it

Connect their Way

Remind101

Everyone loves a good story

What is your SC story?
What are ways you get the school counseling message out to students, parents, and stakeholders?

You have a mission and a vision for the school counseling program so how do you "tell" that story?

Social Media

The numbers don't lie!
How many people use SM personally?
Professionally?

Untitled Slide

  • 60% of 50-60 year old people are active on SM
  • 1.15 M Facebook users
  • 71% utilize a mobile device to access SM
  • 23% of FB users log in 5 times a day
  • From Remind101 Blog
Use social media to tell the story of your program

This is where your students and many of their parents are at so if you don't have a SM component, you are missing a key way to communicate

Social Branding

The power of SM in the SC curriculum
It is important that we teach them how to use their voice in college applications and scholarship applications. Even for job interviews.
