PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Culture of Silence

  • Ignorance & Lethargy are result of:
  • political domination
  • social domination
  • economic domination

"Submerged"

  • People are basically kept in the dark of a situation so
  • that awareness and response are virtually impossible.
  • They are not encouraged and equipped
  • with a way to deal with the situation.

Emerging from the "Culture of Silence"

  • -must look critically at the world
  • equipped with the proper tools
  • be able to eventually perceive reality and
  • the contradictions in it
  • People educate each other through the mediation of the world.

Freire says:

  • a person wins back the right to his own world
  • with education a person comes to a new awareness
  • of self, and a new sense of hope
  • they will no longer be mere objects

Teachers talk about reality like it is:

  • motionless
  • static
  • predictable
  • causes education to become lifeless & petrified

Narration leads to:

  • mechanically memorizing content
  • being filled with content by the teacher
  • meek students being allowed to have info
  • deposited into them

Knowledge emerges:

  • through invention & re-invention
  • the restless, continuing, hopeful inquiry
  • of human beings in the world.
