PROBLEM: EROSION OF SOIL AND VEGETATION

  • Iceland may not rely fully on vegetation to sustain themselves, but it does add into their food supply
  • Their soil and vegetation have been slowly eroding, affecting their food supply a fraction

WHAT THEY HAVE DONE?

  • Iceland has prioritized this issue
  • They have created the Soil Conservation Service of Iceland, charged with the task to combat soio erosion

WHY IS THIS HAPPENING?

  • Icelands soil is picked up by wind easily
  • Reason being, the soil contains a fair amount of volcanic ash
  • This causes desertation in many areas of iceland

SOLUTIONS

  • Retaining walls, keep stuff in so water will have a much tougher job eroding
  • Mulch or fertilizer, enable the soil to slowly soak up water, in turn enabling the soil to not be eroded
  • Vegetation, planting plants so that their roots stabilize the soil
  • Geotextiles, beams planted in the soil to stabilize the soil

BEST AND EASIEST SOLUTION

  • Mulch and fertilizer, its cost effective, time consuming, and may do better when paired with vegetation
  • Retaining walls may help alot, but will be very tricky to set up, and nit very cost effective
  • Geotextiles may be permanent, but will be tricky to set up, and may need replacing.
