GEOGRAPHY

  • A couple important bodies of water to the sumerians were
  • the tigris and euphrates rivers.

Existed from 3200 BCE-2300 BCE and then the Akkadians took over.

MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS

  • Developed cuneiform, the worlds first writing system.
  • The first people to build wheeled vehicles.
  • They even catalogued treatments and symptoms.
  • From platform rose the temple tower, called a ziggurat (holy mountain)

LIFESTYLE/CULTURE

  • Each sumerian city rose up around the shrine of a local god.
  • Women were protected by late sumerian law and were able to acheive
  • higher status but the culture is male dominant.
  • Pottery was a huge part of everyday life. They even had different
  • pots for almost everything.

Ancient archaeological site of Ur, believed to be the biblical birth place of Abraham, in southern Iraq. Experts are now urgently trying to conserve the wonders of the past century of this ancient Sumerian city.
