THE SCARLET LETTER NATHANIEL HAWTHORNe

Why does the mistreatment of women harm society as a whole?

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:

The article, "Everyday Sexism and Women's Mental Health" by Beatrice Alba argues that the mistreatment of women harms society as a whole because it makes the world more difficult for women to live in, thus, disengaging women from society completely.

Alba explains that, "Women experience economic, workforce and healthcare disadvantages... gendered violence in public places..." and more. The suffering of women could lead to women abandoning society and making it harder to live in.

Alba works as a Research Fellow at the Australian Research Centre for Sex Health and Society, at La Trobe University.

Women Would be Silenced

Women being treated as less than men has been normalized for a while. This is not to be taken lightly because it can really mess with someone's mental health. Women being mistreated can really bring society down because of the toll it takes on a woman's mind.

"The Scarlet Letter" novel shows through Hester that once she left her "society", the Puritan society she was living in, she finally felt free. She was mistreated because she committed adultery, but she was the only one who was punished and the man who she committed it with was not. Because Hester was mistreated, she isolated herself and it dealt a great deal to her mental health. This caused her to ultimately give up on her society.

In the article, "Everyday Sexism and Women's Mental Health" Beatrice Alba says that, "Everyday sexism is often present at a constant low-level in the background of our lives, adding an extra layer of stress. Unsurprisingly, these subtle forms of everyday sexism have been linked to poorer mental health." Silencing a woman would harm a society because it needs equality to be a good society.

Economy Could Decline

Women are very important in society when it comes to economy. Another effect of sexism against women is that if it did ultimately silence them, this could potentially stop a woman from trying to take a role in society in fear of being mistreated for her gender.

In "The Scarlet Letter" a lot of the women, including Hester in the Puritan society work as seamstresses; an extremely important job because seamstresses were needed to make and fix clothes for the townspeople. Women all around the world have important jobs that they specialize in and are needed to fill. This includes being a mother.

Men Would Have Problems

Women are extremely important because they provide children for the world. The mistreatment of women could definitely harm society because women would not want to be with sexist men, and because of this society would never expand, develop and ultimately evolve without new generations.

In "The Scarlet Letter", Hester's daughter, Pearl, is one of the reasons for Hester's mistreatment. Pearl is the outcome of Hester's adulterous crime. If Hester had been unfairly sentenced to death for her crime, her daughter wouldn't have had a mother figure to guide her through the rest of her life. Overall, if women were not around, the newest generations would not thrive.

The article shows that, "Some people presume anti-discrimination legislation, equal pay, and ensuring motherhood is not a barrier to workforce participation are all that’s needed to achieve gender equality." The mistreatment of women harms society because it would make men's lives harder as well because they would be punished for causing the chaos in the first place.
