MARRIAGE IN 1500s

  • Churches law dictated all legal marriages
  • There were no legal processes needed
  • Many marriages were organised to secure alliances.

  • Marriage was regarded as one of the seven Holy Sacraments.
  • Mostly the poor people only married for love which was considered foolish in the 1500's.

  • Mostly people did not have a voice .
  • Only between men and women.
  • Taught to follow elders.

  • In 1500s you had to get married before having children.
  • The marriage was 'paid' for through possessions which they agreed share

DIVORCE

  • Henry the eight changed the divorce rules making divorce more possible.
  • Henry vIII wanted to divorce Kathrine of Aragon.
  • Pope clement would not let him.

  • In 1533 obtained a divorce from Thomas Cranmer
  • Chose a new archbishop when Warham died.

DIVORCE

  • Prove that your marriage had never been valid because:
  • Insane
  • Lack of consent
