JOPLIN, MO. TORNADO

Background
April of 2011 had been a very active month for tornadoes and tornado sirens in Joplin were normal

1:30 P.M. on May 22, a tornado watch for an area including Joplin. Temperatures at low 80s, dew point above 70 degrees

  • 5:00: Funnel cloud poked out
  • 5:09: Tornado warning with sirens
  • 5:31: 2nd siren warning
  • 5:34: Tornado touchdown

DURING

  • EF5 at strongest (winds over 200 MPH).
  • There was rain, lightning, trees breaking, and homes and vehicles being smashed
  • St. John's Hospital damaged
  • 22.1 mile path. Lasted 38 minutes

AFTER

  • Tornado faded
  • City wreaked. Some survivors limp to hospital, others trapped in rubble

COST & EFFECTS

  • Cost $3 billion in insurance costs.
  • 151 deaths, over 1,000 injured
  • 7,000 homes destroyed, broken power lines (no power)
