PRESENTATION OUTLINE

faith academy

elementary reading program

Reading @ Faith ESD

  • Faith is committed to making opportunities and providing resources to help students read.
  • The best way for students to learn how to read is to read.
  • There needs to be space and time for students to read.
  • Each student has a reading goal.

The programs

  • This year, Faith Academy adopted Lucy Calkins' Units of Study Reading to two programs they were already using to teach reading - the Daily 5 and C.A.F.E. programs.
  • Prior to Lucy Calkins, Faith Academy had been using the Reading Street program.

lower elementary

  • The focus is on building the routine of reading, building stamina for reading, and teaching independence in the reading process.
  • Primary Programs: C.A.F.E. and Daily 5.
  • Additional: Lucy Calkins Reading.

upper elementary

  • The focus is on going into more depth, greater comprehension, and the student's individual reading goals.
  • Primary Program: Lucy Calkins Reading.
  • Reinforcement Programs: C.A.F.E. and Daily 5.

Lucy Calkins Reading

  • 2 units on reading fiction texts.
  • 2 units on reading informational texts.
  • Reading Workshop method with mini-lessons for the whole class, individual goals, and conferencing.

reinforcement programs

  • C.A.F.E. and Daily 5 are used as reinforcement or reminder programs but are not the focus in Upper Elementary at Faith Academy.
  • The goal is that students will already be familiar with and using their learning from these two programs as they progress.

reliability & validity

  • I don't have access to the test results to confirm that these programs are working but what I have seen through my own observations as the former librarian at Faith Academy is students who genuinely love reading, who love talking about the books they are reading, who are interested in learning more about the world around them, and who are on a path to being lifelong readers.
