What did you think?

After this learning experience, I have learned a lot about the music curriculum, where to find resources and the best assessment practices for instrumental music. What I have taken away from this course is that it is important to know that we are going to be teaching students who are at so many different stages in their musical development. Because of this, we as teachers need to make sure we know our students so that we can create ample opportunities for them to explore music in different ways.

How do you feel?

See notes for details.
After taking this course, I feel that I have a lot more resources and support than I did before. Although teaching music will be a big change for me this year, this course gave me a lot of insight into music education. From the resources we were shown to the rich discussions that were had, I have definitely learned a lot. Even though I have learned a lot about music (and myself) over the last 4 weeks, I do know that there is still a lot of learning to be had.

How will this learning impact your practice?

See notes for details.
One of the ways that this learning will impact my practice is through the way I assess my students. Understanding that all students are different and learn in different ways goes hand in hand with this. I have learned that it is important to create assessments that will help our students be successful. Also, having a variety of types of assessments will also allow you to reach all types of learners. Another way that this learning is going to impact my current practice is how I get my students to choose their instrument they want to play. I love the idea of allowing students to explore the types of instruments and the sounds that they make before committing to one.
