What is the "written word" stage?

A transitional stage of literacy development between the beginning stage when students' reading and writing are quite labored and the intermediate stage when they can read and write a variety of genres more fluently.

Signs students are in this stage

  • begin to lose finger pointing
  • stop saying words out loud to silent reading
  • discuss more context of text
  • begin reading chapter books

Writing "within word" stage

  • more fluent
  • more time to concentrate
  • compose with greater complexity and sophistication

Increasing Vocabulary

  • Use sophisticated language in daily interactions
  • Develop the habit of commenting on and making observations about words throughout the day
  • Read A-louds, word sorts, concept sorts
