A quick user's guide to get a class podcast together whether it's for delivering information, offering feedback, or providing direction.

CONTENT CLARITY

DO-Wop
1. Content first: As important as audio quality is (Do #2), it should not be at the expense of content. It's important not to sacrifice the message to the format. i.e. What you have to say is just as important as how you say it. Provide engaging content that is relevant, real, informative, educational or entertaining.

PROFESSIONAL POLISH

2. Polish with Professionalism is key.
Regardless of whether you are podcasting from a garage or a studio there’s no reason to skimp on a professional sound and feel. Make sure you have the right tools, like a good microphone. Free software can help you to edit the audio file and filter background noise. Listeners won’t tolerate poor audio quality. If time is an issue where editing is concerned, at least record more than once to select the best version.

TRANSCRIBE/SCRIPT

3.Transcribe (or Script)
Provide listeners a transcript or script in the description of the podcast feed. There are pros and cons to pre-emptively scripting or retroactively transcripting. Weigh them and choose, but don’t skip it. This will help learners with content uptake, but, more importantly in pedagogy, we’re talking about accessibility. This means, legal ramifications. Post the transcript for those who may have hearing difficulties.

RESPECT TIME

4. Respect Time
Student workload is at stake here. Remember student workloads consists of absolutely everything that contributes to the time it takes to interact with your course. A good range is 2-5 minutes. However, if providing feedback or giving steps, how-tos, it is better to err on the side of having only a few steps in a single podcast. This keeps down time, but, more importantly, keeps the behaviors and the actions the students need to take realistic. A video like that can be a bit longer, especially if providing some examples, but can stay below 10 minutes.

STRAY

1. Stray
Do not stray too far from the topic. Focus is important, and critical for retaining listeners. This is where outlining and scripting can be a boon for success.

RAMBLE

2. Ramble
Make a point then move on, there is no need for rambling. Dead air, or "umms" will drive listeners away, just like in any presentation: keep the show moving. Audio editing software can address uncomfortable silence or repetition. One caveat here is that certain redundancy can be beneficial when used for purpose, but don’t tip the scales to repeating the same thing over and over.

FORGET ALIGNMENT

3. Forget Alignment
It is critical that you include appropriate and relevant keywords in your podcast feed title and description, this will help listeners locate your podcast. Use consistency matched to the course content, structure, and other components that are labelled within a course. Make sure that your file type is accessible, preferably one that can be played within a Learning Management System without redirecting to a different website or requiring a download that depends on learners having a particular audio software.

IGNORE AUDIENCE

4. Ignore Your Audience
Do not ignore your audience. Create a venue for listeners to communicate with you, whether it be through email, a forum or a blog. Listen to what your audience is saying, and even more importantly listen to what they are not saying. If your audience requires accommodation for accessibility, such as pictorial or text presentation of the exact same content in the podcast, make it available to them.
