JJ THOMPSON

BACKGROUND

• Full name is Joseph John Thompson.
• Born in Manchester on December 18th 1856.

SCHOOLING

• Entered trinity college in Cambridge in 1876 as a minor scholar.
• Remained a member of the college for the rest of his life.
• Became a lecturer and master there.
• He was Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics.

He performed a series of experiments in 1897 designed to study the nature of electric discharge in a high vacuum cathode-Ray tube, which was popular at the time.

Thompson was awarded the 1906 Nobel Prize in physics, for his work on the conduction of electricity in gasses.
