ATOMS

  • Atoms are the smallest form of matter
  • Pure elements are made of different atoms
  • Atoms are made of Protons, Neutrons and Electrons
  • it's important to know what atoms are because:
  • We should understand what elements things are made of

ELEMENT

  • Elements are made of one KIND of atom
  • They are found on the periodic table of elements
  • Elements gets their names from different things
  • Ex. Neptunium, Californium, Sumarium
  • Elements also have symbols like: Au, Na, O

PROTON

  • Protons are in the nucleus of an atom
  • They are positively charged
  • It's important to know what a proton is
  • Because they determine what kind of atom

NEUTRON

  • Found also in the nucleus
  • They have no charge
  • (Their netural)
  • Neutrons are important because
  • They get you the atomic mass number

ELECTRON

  • They have a negative charge
  • They are found orbiting the nucleus
  • They are important because they
  • Counter balance Protons

NUCLEUS

  • Nucleus is Latina for little nut
  • The nucleus is the center of the atom
  • It contains both protons and neutrons

ATOMIC MASS NUMBER

  • The atomic number is the number of:
  • Neutrons + Protons
  • It's useful to know the amu so you can
  • Figure out what kind of element the atom is

ATMOIC MASS

  • Atomic mass is the weighed average of isotopes
  • Basically the mass of an atom
  • It's necessary that we figure out know what the atomic mass
  • Is because it tells us oh many isotopes an atom has

ATOMIC NUMBER

  • It's the number of protons found in an atom
  • We need to understand atomic numbers so we can
  • Elements can be identified by the atomic number

ISITOPES

  • When an atom has a different number of neutrons
  • It becomes a proton
  • Protons can be identified by the atomic mass number
  • (AMN)
  • There for it is important to know what isotopes are

IONS

  • When atoms have a different amount of electrons it's called an ion
  • It's important to know because we know if the atoms positive or negative
  • When an ion is Negatively charged it's called an anion
  • When their positively charged it's called an cation
  • You can remember it because anti means against
