Hypothermia

  • Hypothermia can happen when the body temperature s below 35°C.
  • A person with hypothermia may not be aware of their need for medical attention.
  • A body temperature below 32°C is life threatening.

How is Hypothermia Prevented

  • Dress warmly in layers (Warm coat, snow boats, snow pants).
  • Stay dry (Wetness makes your body temperature go down rapidly).
  • get out of the cold as soon as you can if you start feeling cold.

How is Hypothermia Treated

  • Remove wet clothing.
  • Do not use direct heat; use warm blankets, towels.
  • If the person appears dead, CPR should be given whilst the person is being warmed - never assume the person is dead!

Fire Building

  • If your in snow lay down rocks were your going to build your fire.
  • Start of with making a teepee shape.
  • Make some tinder by scraping off thin pieces of dry wood.
  • Place the tinder under the teepee shape and light your fire.
