PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE CHILDREN'S REFERENDUM

Article 42A, 10 November 2012

WHAT WAS IT?

  • An article to be added to the constitution
  • It was to increase children's rights in Ireland
  • Child protection was not good enough

Children were being abused and sometimes had to stay in a household that wasn't safe as it was assumed being with parents was always the best option for a child. Some children were not being allowed to be adopted, and weren't asked their opinions in court cases that affected them. Ireland needed better child protection. The referendum allowed us to establish better child protection laws and support for families.
