What causes water pollution?

• Storm water run-off picks up all pollutant and enter into water streams.  
• Mining activities (Acid mine drainage)
• Acidental Oil leakage 
• Chemical fertilizers and pesticides 
• Animals waste 

Mining Activities

• When rain or surface flows over exposed rock and soil. 
• It forms sulfuric acid and also washes heavy metals into the water.
• It kills everything from microscopic to large fish. 
• The ecosystem is completely destroyed. 
• Spills and leaks and mountaintop removal mining. 

Animals waste

• The waste produce by animals is washed away into our water streams(rivers) 
• Mixed up with other harmful chemicals 
• It causes diseases like cholera, diarrhea, jaundice, dysentery. 

Chemical fertilizes and pesticides

• These used by farmers to protect crops from insects and bacterias.
•  The rains mixed up with these chemicals, flows down to rivers and canals.
• Cause serious damage for aquatic animals. 

Acidental Oil Leakage

• Large amount of oil spill enter into sea. Does not dissolve in water.
• serious damage and harmful to fish, bird, sea otters.etc.  
• cause varying of damage to species depending on the amount of oil spill.

Other causes

• Collected and deposited garbage into sea in some countries. 
• Marine dumping: items from garbage takes 2weeks to 200 years to decompose 
• enters the sea cause water pollution and cause serious damage to species 

Examples

• The accident in 2000 sent some 100,000 tons of waste water.
• Poured in copper,cyanide and heavy metals into the Tisza River.
• Destroyed 1,240 tons of fish.
• Polluting the drinking water that supplies 2.5 million people.
