Acid and Base

  • Acid: a molecule or other entity that can donate a proton
  • Base: a molecule or entity that accepts a proton

Properties of Acids and Bases

  • Acids: taste sour, turn litmus paper red, found in fruits
  • Base: taste bitter, turn litmus paper blue, found in soaps

Reading PH

  • Less than 7, the substance is and acid
  • Greater than 7, the substance is a base
  • Equal to 7, than it is neutral and most likely water.

Conductivity meter

  • Used to see if the substance produces electricity
  • If the light bulb lights up it is an electrolyte
  • If the light bulb doesn't light up it is a nonelectrolyte
