PRESENTATION OUTLINE

1080 POISON

GOOD OR BAD?

YELLOW HAT

  • It kills pests.
  • Increases native bird breeding rates.
  • When pests eat other pests that have eaten 1080, they die too.
  • Native trees and plants grow better.
  • 1080 is a better, easier way to kill pests.

BLACK HAT

  • There is no antidote.
  • 1080 doesn't break down in the body, which risks secondary poisoning.
  • Cows can pick up TB just by sniffing an infected possum.
  • There is risk of 1080 getting into the water supply.

RED HAT

  • I think we should use 1080, even though there are risks. Since we've started using 1080, the native animal population has increased, and even though it is harmful to humans, it has never been found in the water supply. It's a question of saving the native animals, or letting pests run wild.
