PRESENTATION OUTLINE

TEKS 1:
ELAR 3.8 Multiple genres: listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking using multiple texts--literary elements. The student recognizes and analyzes literary elements within and across increasingly complex traditional, contemporary, classical, and diverse literary texts. The student is expected to:
(B) explain the relationships among the major and minor characters.

TEKS 2:
ART 3.2 Creative expression. The student communicates ideas through original artworks using a variety of media with appropriate skills. The student expresses thoughts and ideas creatively while challenging the imagination, fostering reflective thinking, and developing disciplined effort and progressive problem solving skills. The student is expected to:
(A) integrate ideas drawn from life experiences to create original works of art.

Learning Objectives:
1. The learners will learn how to explain the relationships among the major and minor characters in The Colors of Us through turn & talk with peers.

2. The learners will learn how to integrate ideas drawn from life experiences to create original works of art through drawing a self portrait of themselves.

Instructions to Complete Activity:
1. Mix spices with water and oil (olive, vegetable, canola, etc.) until it is a paint like consistency.

2. Add additional spices to customize your skin tone.

Tip: Starting the base with flour will make the color customization process easier.

Final Product.

Students will be assessed informally using "Turn & Talk" at their tables. Students will discuss their paintings with their group. The teacher will be walking around the room conferencing with each student about their painting.
