Stachtopoúta

A Greek Cinderella Story.

Long ago in the palace of Crete, there was a handsome king.

He even caught the eye of the goddess Aphrodite. They had a daughter. Aphrodite left after that.

Despite being a gift from Aphrodite the king hated his daughter.

He took out his hatred by making her do the housework with the other servant.

The king did not even let her have her room so she slept by the hearth.

The king would often hold feasts and only let Stachtopoúta have his scraps.

Despite her tiny portions she still had faith, sacrificed, and prayed to the gods.

One day the king of Athens sent out invitations to a party.

The king went and made Stachtopoúta clean the floors.

The gods took pity on her and sent nymphs to help.

The gods also gave her a ship to get to Athens.

The father recognized Stachtopoút. He grew furious and followed her.

He waited until she was on a balcony and pushed her off.

This was the greatest sin in the eyes of the gods.

On the way back to Crete the king's ship was sunk.

The king was sent to the field of punishment.

Stachtopoúta was taken to Olympus by Hermes.

The gods made her a goddess for her suffering and her faith in them.

She became Písti the goddess of faith.
