How can social isolation potentially be beneficial?

Untitled Slide

“The psychological benefits of being alone,” written by Kendra Cherry, gives a clear visual as to how isolation can be beneficial. Isolation has a variety of benefits that come with it. There is a major difference between being alone and loneliness. Being alone is often found to be a choice while loneliness is a result of something such as being seen as an outcast. “Loneliness involves being isolated despite wanting social connections, where being alone means taking time for yourself between regular social interactions” (Cherry 7). Taking breaks from the social world can be healthy as well as beneficial.

Benefits

Being alone can improve your memory and concentration. How? Well, while working alone, your focus and attention are put onto one thing at a time rather than being scattered around while working in a group. Productivity is also seen to be increased while being alone because the collaboration and distraction of others is not involved.

SIGNIFICANCE

Self isolation is seen as beneficial through that of Hester. She was once a very sinful women. Once isolated from others, she begins to sew clothing and finds herself again. Because of this change within Hester, the townspeople begin to not see her as so much a walking sin, but a women with talent and carries value. It can be seen that she has gained respect around the town when Hawthorne writes, “[…] a species of general regard had ultimately grown up in reference to Hester Prynne” (Hawthorne 250). Hester over time had a build up of respect around.
