Applied forces
An applied force is a force that is applied to an object by a person or another object. If a person is pushing a desk across the room, then there is an applied force acting upon the object. The applied force is the force exerted on the desk by the person.

Applied forces can change the state of rest or state of motion of an object, the direction of motion of the object, or the shape and size of the object.

An applied force can be a push, pull, or dragging on an object. ... The action from a force can cause an object to move or speed up (accelerate), to slow down (decelerate), to stop, or to change direction.

Gravitational forces
Gravity, or gravitational, is a natural phenomenon by which all things with mass or energy-including planets, stars, galaxies, and even light-are attracted to one another. On Earth, gravity gives weight to physical objects, and the moon’s gravity causes the tides of the oceans.

We call the gravitational force attractive because it always tries to pull masses together, it never pushes them apart. In fact, every object, including you, is pulling on every other object in the entire universe.
