PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ANTERIOR CRUCIATE LIGAMENT

BY LUCY CATALAN

DESCRIBE THE INJURY

  • Most ACL injuries are complete or near complete tears. About 1/2 of ACL injuries occur along with damage to other structures in the knee. Injured ligaments are considered "sprains" and are graded on a severity case. (Grade 1-3 sprains)

SIGNS/SYMPTOMS

  • Knee swelling
  • Instability
  • Pain

TREATMENTS (HOW CAN WE FIX IT?)

  • Treatment consists of surgery and physical therapy.

PRO- ATHLETE

  • Rafael Alcantara, also known as, Rafinha suffered a tear to the Anterior Cruciate Ligament on September 16,2015. He was injured after being brought down from behind on a slide tackle. He had to undergo surgery and was told he would be out for the rest of the season and has yet to say when he'll be back.

FACTS

  • Females are at greater risk, mainly because females have stronger quadriceps muscles in relation to the posterior chain muscles, coupled with weaker and more moveable core muscles.
