What was the Great Depression?

  • The Great Depression was a severe worldwide economic depression that took place during the 1930s.

Causes of the Great Depression:

  • 1929 stock market crash
  • dramatic drops in demand and credit
  • disruption of trade, resulting in widespread unemployment

What was the Dust Bowl?

  • also known as the Dirty Thirties, was a period of severe dust storms that greatly damaged the ecology and agriculture of the US and Canadian prairies during the 1930's.

The effect of the Dust Bowl:

  • it lasted about a decade. Its primary area of impact was on the southern Plains. The northern Plains were not so badly effected, but nonetheless, the drought, windblown dust and agricultural decline were no strangers to the north.
