Slide Notes

The city of Morelia, endearingly referred to as the city of eternal spring, is spiritual land. Located in the valley between two mountain ranges, it is a rich agricultural city. It is also an UNESCO architectural treasure; a historical colonial city full with history and visual culture.

The city’s income is largely supported by its tourism industry—one of the bigger tourist attractions are the legend tours that give the history of all ghostly and holy apparitions in the city.

One building in particular, El Templo de Las Rosas connected to Las Rosas Conservatory, is unique. The apparition story recounts that La Santa Rosa de Lima, the patron saint of the church, disappears from her alter and disguises herself as one of the nuns, a young woman forced into the nunnery by her family. Santa Rosa dwells in the convent for a few months while the woman explores the world outside of the convent walls, and re-appears to her alter upon the return of the runaway nun (Orozco 2019).

Thesis

The format of the apparition of absence at El Templo de Las Rosas located in the heart of Morelia, Michoacán, created a cult of feminine mysticism that goes beyond the religious control of Catholicism: much like cult of La Virgen de Guadalupe, the specific localized sect of Santa Rosa de Lima in Morelia, Michoacán, Mexico serves to subvert notions of Anglo-Machismo (Anzaldúa, 1987) and the madonna-whore dichotomy, while also deriving power from femininity and spirituality.
