PRESENTATION OUTLINE

GOD GREW TIRED OF US

A Humanities project

Skill 1 ~ Perspective
John has a strong view, that is to keep his culture alive; he would prefer to continue to keep up traditions. “I’m worried about the young guys, Sundanese young guys; those who can easily give up whatever they have. What if they forsake culture? How is this people going to be?What you are doing there, the way you are dressing, the way you are doing your hair, the way you are conducting yourself; you are always from our culture. Please come back,”(1:08:09 GOD GREW TIRED OF US).John can also see that his culture and that these young men are being “infested” with pop culture, and it gives him a sense of unease as what troubles it might cause them.A possible reason is him not wanting the culture to die with them in hopes of either bringing awareness to their culture and the lost boys

Skill 1 ~ part 2
Or he hopes to have the lost boys remember where they came from so they might go back to help their people.
“But this look traditional. This will make us look more Dinka. Make us look African, because you know, a person without culture is like a human being without land.” (GOD GREW TIRED OF US) This can be seen as a slight nod towards his idea of culture, and that his culture is to eat with his hands while other cultures or no culture is to eat with utensils. It also gives an indications that in kakuma everyone ate using their hands and it was normal and part of there culture, while in the U.S. people prefer to use silverware and could see eating with your hands as not having manners.

Skill 2 ~ why it made the cut
This is the scene where the lost boys gather to start a “walk of awareness” to help bring to peoples attention of the war in sudan. “We are going to show the society, or the community of Syracuse that there is war in sudan., and there is something that needs to be done. We are now remembering thise who have died on all those journeys ; from sudan to Ethiopia, from Ethiopia to Kenya, we have to remember.” (GOD GREW TIRED OF US)I think one reason this scene had made the cut is because it wants to remind us that, these lost boys didn’t move to Kenya willingly. These men, when they were younger had been forced out of homes out of fear for their lives. It was either to move or to be killed. They had come so far, so since they had reached a somewhat safer area that was more capable of putting an end to to this war->

Skill 2 ~ part 2
The lost boys wanted to do what they could to help bring attention to the situation. This war in sudan had been the cause of many deaths, and these young boys continually moving to find a safe place to stay. “Me , I know I cannot forsake my culture,American people do not know about Africa, but they will know when we show them. So we are here like ambassadors in this country.”(GOD GREW TIRED OF US). I believe this made a cut to bring awareness to us and to remind us of why they are there.

Skill 3 ~ Implications
A possible implication would be the idea that the U.S. is extremely dangerous, though terrible things can happen it doesn’t necessarily mean it will happen to them.” Somebody told me when I was in kakuma that America is a very strange place. If you happen to be walking on the way on the road, you will meet an accident or somebody may come and he will kill you. But all in all I’m now 7 days old in America and I have never seen such a thing,” (GOD GREW TIRED OF US). With the information John was given he automatically believed he would see this soon as says that a week into it and he hasn’t witnessed it so America is okay.

Skill 3~part 2
John and his friend believethat America is a strange place, because in kakuma very few or none are exposed to accidents or murder. This relates to the fact that in their reserve they didn’t have the development for cars, and everyone was generally kind to each other (this is somewhat expressed/explained to us later in the documentary).

Skill 4 ~ remind
Some areas of the documentary “God Grew Tired of Us,” remind me of “Harry Potter,”because like the lost boys, Harry is introduced into a new place of development. They both have to adjust to the different places, learn how things work and try new foods. I’m Harry spotter there are things the wizard world that aren’t as developed as where the muggles live, because they have magic and do not need to use electronics; They don’t know how they work. When the lost boys came to America they had to adjust to all the development that they did not have back in kakamu, such as plumbing, and electricity. When the John, Panther, and David moved to New York ->

Skill 4 ~ part 2
They did whatever they could to get by but to also keep there cultures and traditions; but were also confused by traditions such as Christmas. Harry Potter was fascinated when seeing the wizarding world and was ready to learn everything about it, and when talking about “muggle” devices and things, some of the wizards were confused.
