Conscious Choking

Step 1: Survey the scene

  • Look for any potential danger
  • Have someone call 911 and get an AED
  • Check for responsiveness by flicking foot
  • Check the ABCs (Airway, Breathing, Circulation)
  • Cannot cough, cry, or breathe

Step 2: give back blows

  • Firm back blows with heel of one hand
  • Between infant's shoulder blades

step 3: give chest thrusts

  • Support head and neck securely 
  • Keep head lower than the chest
  • Place two or three fingers in center of chest
  • Compress the breastbone about 1.5 inches 
  • 30 compressions

Repeat steps two and three until...

  • Object is forced out
  • Person can cough forcefully or breathe
  • Person becomes unconscious

What to do next

  • If infant becomes unconscious, CALL 911
  • Carefully lower infant onto firm flat surface
  • Give CARE for an unconscious infant
