CHARACTERISTICS

Of contemporary literature

POSTMODERNISM:
Postmodernism is a change from modernism in the arts. modernist writers formed techniques in order to express the 20th century. There are more fictional worlds and dreamlike worlds in postmodernism.

CONTEMPORARY NONFICTION:
Nonfiction used to mean whatever was not fiction, meaning people didn't consider non fiction a form of art in modernist times, at least when you compare it to fiction. But since 20 years after contemporary literature came to be, nonfiction has risen to greatness with the help of postmodernism.

NEW JOURNALISM
Writers felt the need to express there personal opinion in his or her works, they often tried to get to know the people they are writing about.

POETRY
In recent years poetry has exploded, and there are significant differences between poetry written before 1945 and recent poetry. Differences such as, the late T.S. Elliot once said poetry should be intellectually challenging, but poets now don't truly believe that.

HISTORICAL EVENTS DURING THIS PERIOD

JOHN F KENNEDY ASSASINATION:
The John F Kennedy assassination was an unbelievable event during this period because it was the first time that a president had been assassinated in a long time, and it was crazy that he was murdered in the wide open in front of a lot of people.

FIRST MEN ON THE MOON:
When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed on the moon, it changed everything because only 50 years ago, nobody even thought about it, and when the US finally did it, it was huge. It was also huge because we beat the Russia to the moon which was a huge win for the US during the Cold War.

CIVIL RIGHTS MOVEMENT:
The fight of African Americans to make places un-segregated, was a huge one and inspired many writers to inspire other people to do something about it.

FAMOUS AUTHORS

JOHN STEINBECK
Though Steinbeck is most well known for his novels before contemporary literature was established, he did continue to write good fictional books such as his 1952 piece "East of Eden", after the contemporary age began.

HARPER LEE
Harper lee wrote one of the best novels of her time, and her "to kill a mocking bird" won a Pulitzer Prize in 1960. She wrote about stuff she cared about, and one of those were to give African Americans rights.

MAYA ANGELOU:
Maya Angelou was an African American writer that wrote a lot of books about the civil rights movement, including her autobiographical book "I know why the caged bird sings" published in 1969. It detailed the hardships in the first 17 years of her life.

DR.SEUSS
Dr.Seuss was a huge children's book writer but somehow, his books felt like they delved into something much bigger. He won many prizes for many books, and almost everybody is familiar with at least one or two Dr.Seuss books.

FAMOUS BOOKS AND NOVELS

OF CONTEMPORARY LITERATURE

TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD:
To kill a mockingbird was one of the most well known books during the 60's and delved into issues such as racial inequality and violence towards women.

LORD OF THE FLIES:
Lord of the flies really dove into the major issues that William Golding believed in. Golding wrote "The Lord of the flies for one sole purpose", to prove deep down every human being has a dark heart. He did a very compelling job of it.

BELOVED:
Beloved, by Toni Morrison won a Pulitzer Prize award in 1986, and was set pre civil war, and is about trying to escape slavery. The theme of this novel was about bond between mother and child. The main character (the mother) would have rather killed her own children than have them endure the torture of slavery.
