PRESENTATION OUTLINE

In 1890, C.L. Coffin of Detroit was awarded the first U.S. patent for an arc welding process using a metal electrode. This was the first record of the metal melted from the electrode carried across the arc to deposit filler metal in the joint to make a weld. Welding started in the 1800s when blacksmiths would heat the metal until it was bright red in color. The blacksmiths would then place the two pieces, slightly overlapping, on an anvil and pound them together. There are also traces of welding being done in the Middle Ages too. Edmund Davy of England is credited with the discovery of acetylene in 1836. He made welding successful for being able to heat things up faster and to cut metal faster and easier.

To be a welder you really don't need to go to college but it would be a huge advantage if you did. Welding is a skill that you learn hands on mainly. To be a welder you have to become certified. To become certified you need to do a certain weld. There are thousands of certifications that you can get by doing these certain welds with certain rods. The best route to become a welder would be is to talk to your welding teacher or any manufacturing teacher you have because they are the ones with connections. Welding can be related to many jobs like piping, pluming, and many other jobs. To obtain this job you need to be able to solve mathematical problems, be creative, being able to have a steady hand, to no what rod you need for the job, and be certified. And you have to be successful to get this job to know what your doing.

The average work day can consist of a lot of things you can be welding piping and next your welding sockets to extensions. It fits the big picture because you are the one who is putting the two different pieces together as one. And making it into a tool that someone will be using to make there life easier. Welding can be iffy given your employer it could be whenever they call or during the day. The environment can be anywhere either deep in the sea welding pipelines or in a factory welding on parts. Whoever makes the contract with me is my boss. A beginning welder can start off at 12-14 dollars a hour and experienced welders can be paid up to 30-40 dollars a hour. Welders can get pension, health insurance, vacation, and welfare.

Some challenges that you will come across could be trying to find someone to have you be there apprentice and trying to find a good paying company. Some perks is that welding will always be a job that's in demand if you can land a good job the pay well be great. In Michigan welders are a needed job they have a lot of unions for welders like the boilermakers which I'm trying to get into too. Welding is needed al over us a lot are needed around the coast for piping and other deep sea welding jobs. It was affected by the downturn because there were less jobs in manufacturing because business was really slow and if that's slow there's less jobs for welders to do. Company's near by are futuramic tool and engineering and industry specific solutions, and superior heat treat. Welding helps benefit the community by making things that will make life easier like bridges and other tools like hammers and sockets.

You can't make big things like ships in one piece, it's not practical, so they have to be made of bits joined together. Instead of using bolts and rivets welding is a lot stronger and cheaper in the long run. And without it modern day ships, oil pipes, boats and tools would not be as they are now. I think this job would be perfect for me. Given the fact I wanted to be one sense freshmen year. I love to do things that involve me using my hands and my head. And this job could get me a lot of money if I play my cards right.
