THE FIRST AMENDMENT

BY: KRISTINE BASSETT

"Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise of thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably, and the petition the Government for a redress of grievances."

Seperete clauses and one is freedom of press.

*The important part of the amendment that relates to journalism is the part that says "congress shall make no law...abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press"

Press freedom: The news media are not subject to censorship by the government. ( the government doesn't have the right to control or block things from being published by the press).

The first amendment does apply to schools and students. Public school students retain some level of free-expression rights, even during the school day.

Journalism educators, judges, and First Amendment advocates have supported students using free expression because they should be able to write about living reality, not something sugar coated.
