John F Kennedy
-American politician who served as the 35th President of the United States. During his presidency, he was a significant factor in easing the tension with other nations.

Richard Nixon-the 37th President of the United States. During his presidency he attempted to cover up a scandal on illegal activites with his administration.

Lyndon B Johnson- the 36th president of the United States. During his presidency he designed the "Great Society" which upheld the civil rights movement.

Nikita
Khrushchev- politician who led the Soviet Union during part of the Cold War. He served as Secretary of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union from 1953-1964.

Peace Corps-The Peace Corps is a volunteer program run by the United States government which aids third worl countries with education and better life.

Job Corps- This Corps is a program run by the United States Department of Labor that offers free education and training to young men and women ages 16 to 24.

Bay of Pigs- failed military invasion of Cuba undertaken by the CIA in order to dominate their enemy.

Cuban Missile Crisis- 13 day confrontation between the United States and the Soviet Union concerning Soviet missile launching in Cuba.

Berlin Wall-barrier that divided Berlin from 1961 to 1989. This barrier also set the standard as to what side had more freedom and free of any foreign control.

The Warren Court- the Supreme Court of the United States between 1953 and 1969. This court ruled many cases that shaped the future for many civil rights movements in america.

Miranda Rights- a right to silence warning given by police in the United States to criminal suspects in police custody. This was originally formed by the violation of rights to the suspects of the american people.

Great Society- a set of domestic programs in the United States launched by Democratic President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964–65. This was usually seen as the ideal society to live in.

Medicare- program thought to be just the first piece of legislation towards helping the elderly. It is one of the many programs that still benefit use to this day.

Medicade- program to provide medical and health related services for individuals and families with low incomes. This is yet another program that benefits our lives today.

NASA-agency of the United States Federal Government responsible for the civilian space program as well as aeronautics and aerospace research. This program was a result of the great space race against the foreign enemies.

Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965-set numerical restrictions on visas at 170,000 per year, with a per-country-of-origin quota.

Title IX-No person in the United States shall, on the basis of sex. This was passed due to the descrimination in the sports of public schools.

Martin L King Jr-leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. King became a civil rights activist early in his career and he led the 1955 Montgomery Bus Boycotts.

Thurgood Marshall- an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States, serving from 1967-1991.

Malcom X- American Muslim minister and human rights activist. He was greatly motivated to end segregation by all means necessary.

James Farmer- was a civil rights activist and leader in the Civil Rights Movement. He was known for practicing the same non-violent tactic as King.

Montgomery Bus Boycotts- a political and social protest campaign against the policy of racial segregation. This event lead to many uprisings in protest and attention to the segregation.

Little Rock Nine- group of nine African American students enrolled in Little Rock Central High School in 1957. This group incited many other events that challenged the ruling of segregation.

Brown vs. Board of Education- United States Supreme Court case in which the Court declared state laws establishing separate public schools for black and white students to be unconstitutional.

24th Amendment- prohibits both Congress and the states from conditioning the right to vote in federal elections on payment of a poll tax or other types of tax. This amendment made the poll taxes from the voting unconstitutional.

Civil Rights Act of 1964- piece of civil rights legislation in the United States that outlawed discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, or national origin. This document finally ended all types of segregation in the United States.

UC vs. Bakke- decision by the Supreme Court of the United States. It stated that race couldnt be a factor when deciding who was admited during the college applications.

Femenine Mystique-book by Betty Friedan which is widely credited with sparking the beginning of second-wave feminism in the United States.

United Farm Workers-became allied and transformed from workers' rights organizations into a union as a result of a series of strikes in 1965

Cesar Chavez- co-founded the National Farm Workers Association later the United Farm Workers union. He was a major factor inreforming the rights for the farm workersin america.

American Indian Movement- Indian advocacy group in the United States, founded in 1968. This movement brought reform and rights to the indiands who felt were being violated.

Stonewall Inn Riots- series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community against a police raid. These riots helped the gay community gain awareness for their freedom and equality.
