Begin

with the Learner Experience
When our thinking begins with what the experience will be like for the learner we are placing them deliberately at the centre of our intentional Learning Design.

Students have a tremendous capacity for intensity. - Gary Stager

CHANGE
intrinsic motivation
more control
moral imperative

To progress change, we need to be very clear about the narrative we will use as a beginning.

There are two parts to change, there is the physica, doings and actionings and then there is the perception shift where we move from should to must.

Should is a call to action and change that is driven by someone else.

Must is a call to action and change that has become a matter of critical self-efficacy.

We need to scope the current reality and then create an environment through questioning that disrupts the current paradigm.

The Teaching for Effective Learning Framework (TfEL) is a useful place to strategically explore this.

It is the South Australian position.

It focuses on transforming the work of educators as lead educators and professional designers of intentional learning. It places front and centre, educator voice through current appreciative and applied research.

The companion gives educators a way into exploring their pedagogical practice in small and easy to manage steps.

It is not meant to be a linear progression but designed to build a story of reflective practice and appreciative inquiry.

Social media spaces are about connecting this further through participation and contributions in a growing professional learning community.

Change as an ongoing habit, not a timely effort to 'catch up'. (Semmens, 2016)

Why?

Digital Technologies & Critical & Creative Thinking
Why do we need these aras of focus in the Australian Curriculum?

Technology as the conduit between content and creative application.

We can engage with content critically & creatively, explore content c&c, apply content c&c, publish content c&c.

This shifts when we move from a paper paradigm to a digitally connected paradigm.

Some useful links to explore:

Everything is a remix https://vimeo.com/139094998

Humans need not apply https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Pq-S557XQU

An important consideration to make here is that the focus on Coding must be reconsidered as an outcome of Computational Thinking in the Digital Technologies subject area in the Technologies learning area in the Australian Curriculum.

Deliberate
Has to be until it becomes default

Back to my earlier point, change as a habit, not an effort.

Until something becomes part of our regulr daily consideration nad Learning Design we must incorporate it deliberatley otherwise it gets lost.

20 hours

  • 10 000 hours NO
  • 20 hours OK
  • Pedagogical Content Knowledge PCK
You may be familiar with the concept of 10 000 hours of focused attention and practice being required to become an expert in something.

When we look at the Australian Curriculum Technologies learning area and the subject of Digital Technologies we are faced with the challenge of a completely new area of learning.

It is important to make the distinction between the ICT General Capability and the reference to digital technologies in other areas of the curriculum and the subject area of Digital Technologies contained in the learning area of Technologies.

Spending time deconstructing the subject for 20 hours will place you in a position of familarity so you can apply Pedagogical Content Knowledge as part of your intentional learning design.

Design Learning that improves:

  • Safety for challenge in learning
  • Knowing what to learn...Knowing how to learn...
  • Connect learning to students' lives and context

Know the rules to break the rules

Critical & Creative Thinking
Critical and Creative Thinking will sometimes require a focus on counter intuitive thinking?

Is this the case?

How would we use this position to deliberately incorporate C&C with Digital Technologies?

The TPACK Model provides an agnostic framework that supports intentional PD that can progress this.

Distinction

Between ICT General Capability & Technologies
I cannot stress this enough. Make it a central message in your work to progress this area of learning.

Authentic Learner Narrative of Change Knowledge
As we engage in these areas of learning we must be mindful of the inscription we place over the narrative that the learner creates.

Moving from skills and knowledge to application of these as strategy to attribute to other areas of learning.

How often do you draw on the authentic narrative from the learner as evidence of their learning?

Who is doing the thinking?

Move from telling to asking as a dominant behaviour.

TfEL & Learning Design

ACLeading the Learning
If we assume that teachers are well equipped to develop their capacity to work as Professional Learning Designers we focus on different places for improving teaching and learning.

The Thinking

From skills & knowledge to application of these as strategy

Does what I am teaching have the capacity to be applied?

Roll of the teacher and the outdated flipped class paradigm. Flipped classrooms don't in themselves make better learning experiences or more effective teaching and learning outcomes.

A selection of the media stories about Room 21 along the way:
Carl Smith from ABC’s Behind the News visited late April. We had a great day discussing national park design, working in teams, using Minecraft as a design tool then being interviewed by Behind The News for the students’ early thoughts on the project – as a BtN news story on ABC3. It was interesting to see 3 hours of filming edited down to 3 minutes – but it’s great. Our segment starts just after the 10 minute mark. 20150505 ABC BtN.mp4 *** 81.88 MB
The ABC has developed a BtN teacher resource for the episode – our was used to help other students across Australia learn about designing national parks. The resource can be found at http://www.abc.net.au/btn/resources/teacher/episode/20150505-minecraftingpa....
Then 170+ students around Australia went onto the discuss the project: http://www.abc.net.au/btn/story/s4226619.htm

· Late May the story then left our shores and appeared re-packaged on the BBC in the UK (under arrangement with the ABC). I don’t have the actual file, but you read the story and watch the video at http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/32847385
The class was again on ABC 3 News in July. Research from the Queensland University of Technology (QUT) shows teachers should use the hugely popular children's digital game Minecraft to help teach maths, design, art and geography. To explain on ABC 3 News (a news show for children), ABC journalist Carl Smith used some of the footage he made when he visited our class earlier this year. My kids watch ABC 3 News every night and the segment was a complete surprise. You probably heard the excited screams from our house. It was even shorter than the earlier BtN segment, so less students, but still included Linden Park Primary School minecrafters. It is the first story. 20150708 ABC Behind The News - Research re Minecraft in Classrooms.mp4 33.29 MB.
