GOVERNMENT: THEN

  • Greece originally had an oligarchy. Rich men ruled city-states
  • However Greece had around 30 tyrants 500s B.C.
  • government types were widely different among city-states
  • Democracy was Ancient Greece most used form of government

GOVERNMENT: THEN

  • In 700 B.C. Greece was split into multiple city-states which were very independent, some famous ones are Sparta and Athens
  • Greece established the worlds first democratic government

HUMAN RIGHTS: THEN

  • Husbands were the head of the household
  • Parents usually arranged marriage, and most girls were made to marry in their mid-teens
  • Women were under legal control by their father; once married legally controlled by husband
  • Girls didn't attend much school
  • Women and slaves had no political rights
  • At age seven, boys were forced into military camps if they lived in Sparta

GREEK GOVERNMENT: NOW

  • Greece's official constitution was made in 1975; many amendments made after
  • The president is head of state, but mostly has ceremonial duties
  • The prime minister is head of government
  • Greece has a national government
  • Today human rights are guaranteed by constituition for all citizens

GREECE CURRENT ISSUES

  • The economy struggled terribly in the first decade of 2000s
  • Today it is seen as an acute economy crisis
  • Syria is trying to take control over media around them by blocking television networks in Greece
  • Greece has a high poverty and unemployment rate
  • Overwhelming refugee crisis

GREECE PREVIOUS ISSUES

  • Persian war; persian empire conquered city states, Greeks rebelled and won!
  • Greek war of independence in 1821
  • Athens and Sparta had constant rivalry over dominance in Greece in late 400s B.C.
