DIFFERENTIATED CURRICULA

CREATING WHITE BOYS INTO WHITE MEN
-girls were educated for marriage and motherhood.
-Black children were educated for manual labor, if at all
- White boys were driven toward sports and physical activities that structured civic duty, service, and strength in manliness.

DEVELOPING MANHOOD

BODY, SPORTS, AND DISTANCE FROM BOOKS!
-Boys "natural activities" were the guide for developing curricula to instruct them. Sports, camping, and physical activity.
-Doctors of the time prescribed distractions for nerve force and prevention of neuroasthenia - exercise, exercise, exercise...and no masturbation!

PRIMITIVE EMOTIONS

LEAVE THEM AT HOME WITH MOMMA!
-"Hall trivialized reason as a determinant of behavior and doubted the intellectual capabilities of the average man." -51
-intellectualism left men weakened in modern life
-"A man with broken will did not have the ambition, drive, and desire to achieve in the emerging corporate capitalism nor the character to promote further racial evolution." -51
-"Other character-builders...recommended war to build patriotic feelings, courage, and a sense of serving others." -52
-a successful boy must pass through femininity to achieve manhood - but not get caught in its doldrums!

WORKING AGAINST PRECOCITY

KEEPING BOYS AS BOYS
-precocity = pathology
-keeping boys appropriately dependent -asexual, and unintellectual
-always becoming - must be protected
- certified credentials became accepted requirement for entrance into jobs in bureaucratized corporations and civil service systems. -53
- middle class white parents wanted their sons to remain in school to gain credentials; education became a screening system that differentiated class and race via preparation for careers rather than dead-end jobs. Ibid.

CULTURAL-EPOCHS CURRICULUM

GOING BACKWARD AND FORWARD FOR NOW...
Prioritizing particular histories
-Columbus and European explorers...what are the stories you know if Ponce de Leon? Cortez? General Custer?
-"Stories of great men who would be used throughout to draw boys into tales and to build on their natural interests." -55

AN ADMINISTRATIVE GAZE...

LONGING, DESIROUS, EROTIC, AND CREEPY!
-Young boys must be watched and controlled to make sure they weren't enjoying one another too much...or girls...or anyone in ways that would waste their energies.
-adults determined their activities
-the Othering of someone ALWAYS require a gaze of desire...
-TARZAN! Both other and civilization...
