Users want better (and so do librarians)

How can we optimize the user experience through the management of a library's electronic resources?

Users want Better

Flexible systems

In 2004 Breeding said, "To date, no single product exists that provides comprehensive management of electronic resources, including both front-end and back-end functions." More than 10 years later, we are looking for the same functionality.

Open Systems = Interoperability & Adjustability

In 2004, Breeding said, "the many facets of electronic resource management should be delivered through a set of interconnected modules that work together, sharing common data files or at least communicating with each other through open protocols."

Open CUFTS knowledgebase -
For example:
CUFTS makes holdings available as a XML file for harvesting. EBSCO runs a script twice a week that harvests our EBSCO holdings. The script then takes the multiple XML files, combines them into one, and then loads the file to EBSCO's FTP server. This file is then added into a local collection in EBSCOadmin. EDS uses this local collection as a knowledge base to know what titles are in our holdings.

So yes we HAVE 2 knowledgebases, but we only manage 1 :)

Access to system settings

What do you do when you are leasing content rather than purchasing to own?

+ Customization
(like ranking)

Getting around the "appropriate copy" problem:
Given that many resources are available through multiple sources, knowing which version to link to is a problem. It would be unfortunate for the link to point to the article in one resource it could have been accessed through another with more success.

Maybe I want to choose to display the publisher link because the user will be able to see vivid images, whereas the native database link is only HTML. What happens when we can't make this judgment call?

Eradicate linking issues

It becomes apparent that library holdings data stands at the center of all access problems

Standards
to promote collaboration

NISO Standards

  • Open Discovery Initiative (ODI)
  • Presentation & Identification of E-Journals (PIE-J), Journal Article Tag Suite (JATS), Protocol for Exchanging Serial Content (PESC)
  • Knowledge Base and Related Tools (KBART)
  • NISO Access & License Indicators
  • Etc...

Automation of reporting

I want to know when users are turned away
I want auto renewal reports when licenses are going to end
I want notifications of title list updates

Assessing impact on users

What is the impact electronic resource management has on users?

How can we optimize the management of e-resources if we don't know what the issues are?
