PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The Power of Makeup

by Raquel Rivera

Make up has been around for a really long time

I wanted to know who wore it and since when

Early 1500's

  • Makeup goes back as early as the 1500's
  • "Court of English Queen Elizabeth I popularized the fashion of stark white faces and painted lips."

-White Face
-Painted Lips
-Rose Cheeks

Make up has been around for a really long time

  • White complexions were considered to be the beauty standard
  • Women who worked outdoors had darker complexions
  • This indicated you were poor!
  • If you were "tanned" then you were not considered beautiful

Make up has been around for a really long time

  • "To have a tan, was to suggest that a lady was of a lower class, who worked the land. So women of the ‘better class’ remained indoors or in the shade for most of their day."

This was just the beginning of

MAKE UP HISTORY

Makeup continued to evolve over time...

makeup in the 1700's

  • The White Geisha was popularized in Japan
  • You now see women in white paint, red lips, and dark eyebrows

Geisha Makeup

makeup in the 1900's

I knew makeup was popular in the 19th century

During the 1900's we see a growth a popularity with makeup

makeup in the 1900's

  • After the Industrial Revolution, makeup became more accessible to women
  • We begin to see a rise in makeup productions

makeup in the 1900's

  • 1907 – Safe synthetic hair dye invented by L’Oreal.
  • 1915 – Portable lipstick invented.
  • 1917 – Maybell launches Maybelline cake mascara.

makeup in the 1900's

  • 1920 – Rimmel produces first non-toxic European mascara, eyebrow pencils become popular, and film actors start become primary propagators of new fashion trends.
  • As you can see, makeup here becomes more popular and is available for majority of women

What we want to know is

how does makeup empower women of all communities?

We can see that makeup today is accessible to ALL women

makeup for all

  • Especially here in the United States you see women of all color exploring with makeup
  • It's not just the rich that can access makeup anymore

makeup for all

  • This is the reason why makeup has been an interest of mine for a really long time
  • Becomes I believe makeup has the power to transform people

i want you all to see a real life transformation

jenny 69 is my personal favorite makeup artist

Jenny without makeup

You see a lot of transformations like jenny's

in so many different women!

Nabela

is an indian makeup artist who is using her platform to empower women

SOME STILL BELIEVE THAT "FAT" PEOPLE ARE NOT BEAUTIFUL

Nabela has been bullied for not looking like the "standard" beauty icon of makeup

But instead of letting that discourage her, she is using that to fuel other women to feel beautiful in their own skin

Nabela loves makeup, she has over 1 million followers on instagram and she continues to motivate and inspire women to love themselves and to use makeup as that tool

I want you all to see now

the many different artists of today!

this is how makeup is empowering

women of all colors!

there are so many artists

but this are just a few examples i wanted to show you

Each of these artists have different backgrounds, different colors, different cultures, different genders, but they all have one thing in common.

they all have a love and passion for makeup

they are all using their artistry to give women of all communities, power!

Although makeup has been around for a long time, there was still a huge gap for women of color.

People with darker complexions could not always find makeup to match their skin tone.

There was a lot of criticism for Makeup Lines who would not develop shades for darker women

But Rihanna created a line of makeup to cater to all women of all colors

fenty beauty

is the new generation of makeup

There are over 40 different shades!

Those who didn't have makeup to match their skin tone color now have a shade for them!

so the question still is

how has makeup empowered women of all communities?

if you remember from the beginning of the presentation

makeup was only a thing for the rich!

you would see only those in higher statuses wear makeup

having a tan meant you were poor and were considered lower class

But now you see everyone able to wear make up and feel beautiful and empowered.

makeup is a tool being used

to give people a voice!

I interviewed my sister maria

-Maria is 27 years old
-She used to be bullied when she was younger

-For a long time she suffered with really low self esteem
-Until she discovered makeup

Makeup has given her a sense of belonging

This is why i love makeup

because everyone can be empowered by it
