SITTING BULL

BIRTH

  • Born 1831, in Grand River , South Dakota.
  • Passed away December 15, 1890, in his hometown.
  • Was a warrior, military leader.

EARLY YEARS

  • Age of 10 he killed his first buffalo.
  • Four years later, he fought honorably in a battle against a rival clan.
  • June 1863 he took up arms against United States for the first time.

YOUNG LIFE

  • As a young man sitting Bull increased Sioux hunting grounds.
  • Soon, he became known for his fearlessness in battle.
  • Very generous and wise.

ORIGINAL LIFE

  • His original name was “Jumping Badgar,” from his family.
  • But he earned the name “slow,” for his quiet and deliberate demeanor.

FAMILY

  • He had several wives.
  • Fathered many children, and adopted several others.
  • His children were named Crow Foot, and Many Horses.
  • He also had a sibling names Spotted Elk.

LATER YEARS

  • The U.S. government was greatly embarrassed by this defeat and increased its efforts to capture the territory.
  • Nations fought bravely under sitting bulls leadership.

DEATH

  • In 1890 the local Indian Agency police feared that sitting Bull was planning to flee.
  • Got arrested
  • Gun fight occurred
  • He was then killed in the gun fight.

BURIAL

  • Two days after he was killed, sitting bulls body was unceremoniously buried in the post cemetery at Fort Yates, North Dakota.
  • His grave was vandalized several times.

INTERESTING FACTS

  • He worked in Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show earning $50 a week.
  • He said he “would rather die an Indian than live as a white man.”
