What was voted on?

  • Elections took place on November 3, 2015
  • Consisted of Local and State elections, including 3 elections for governor in Mississippi, Kentucky, and Louisiana

Ohio says no to pot

  • Ohio rejects a bill that would've allowed anyone 21 or older to have up to an ounce of marijuana for recreational use
  • The bill would also allow people to grow a limited amount of pot after purchasing a $50 license

Houston rejects lgbt ordinance

  • Houston voters reject the "Houston Equal Rights Ordinance"
  • HERO bans discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, race, religion, disability, etc.
  • The bill became controversial due to the "Bathroom Ordinance" that would allow men identifying as women to enter women's restrooms and locker rooms (and vice versa)

Seattle passes "honest elections"

  • Initiative 122 - reforms how local elections are financed
  • Lowers donation caps, prevents corporations with significant city interest from funding candidates, increases transparency within an election, increases fines for elector wrongdoing
  • Provides for "Democracy vouchers" - each voter will get 4 $25 vouchers to contribute to the candidate of their choice

Hunting?

  • Washington - passes Measure 1401: criminalizes "selling, purchasing, trading, or distributing certain animal species threatened with extinction"
  • Texas - passes Proposition 6: guarantees a constitutional right to hunt and kill almost all manner of wildlife and the freedom to catch and "bag" as many fish as they can haul back home.

San francisco defends right to airbnb

  • SF voters reject Proposition F which would have banned "short-term rentals" within the city
  • Supporters of the bill claim housing costs have skyrockets in response to the rise of short-term rentals
  • Users of sites like AirBNB are able to lease out their homes to travelers for short periods of time

Kentucky's new governor

  • The most surprising result
  • Matt Bevin (R) beat Jack Conway (D)
  • Bevin is controversial because he plans to defund Planned Parenthood, reverse some aspects of Obamacare, and support county clerks (like Kim David) who refused to sign marriage licenses for same-sex couples
