Tesla was the stereotype, but also a superstar…
a long forgotten genius, finally getting recognition.

the real tesla:

  • His childhood science inspiration? His cat.
  • Worked for Edison (which didn't end well!)
  • First to harness Niagara Falls' power
  • Spoke eight languages, recited books from memory
  • Knew Marconi used 17 of his patents to 'discover' Radio

the real tesla:

  • Quirky genius with OCD
  • Mark Twain was a close personal friend
  • At 6'6" a magnet for the ladies, yet: celibate
  • Goal: free electricity, worldwide, for everyone
  • Died penniless, alone, with pigeons as companions

Tesla: Man Out of Time

Margaret Cheney's definitive biography

" [Cheney] has given us a detailed and accurate biography of the man, of his amazing inventions, and of the life he lived. Fasten your seat belts to learn a bit about the one man who made possible the technology which powered the twentieth century and whose legacy of forgotten and hidden inventions lies like a large seam of precious ore waiting to be uncovered and mined for the twenty-first century." - B. Matherne, Reader's Journal

"Called a madman by his enemies, a genius by others, and an enigma by nearly everyone, Nikola Tesla was, without a doubt, a trailblazing inventor who created astonishing, sometimes world-transforming devices that were virtually without theoretical precedent... Cheney paints a compelling human portrait and chronicles a lifetime of discoveries that radically altered -- and continue to alter -- the world in which we live." - Goodreads

"In bucolic Smiljan where his first years were spent, the intense child with the pale wedge-shaped face and shock of black hair seemed to live a charmed life. Just as in later years he would work with high voltages of electricity without serious harm, he then skated through extraordinary dangers...a catalogue of near-catastrophes"

" 'Let's have the show, Tesla. You know what I always say.' 'No, what do you always say, Mark?' the inventor asked with a smile. '...thunder is good, thunder is impressive, but it is lightning that does the work.' " - An exchange between Tesla and Twain, in M. Cheney, Tesla: Man Out of Time

Fictional Tesla:

the five fists of science

Matt Fraction & Steven Sanders

The Five Fists of Science is a book that I can easily say caught me off guard. ... I knew I was in for an amusing little romp to say the least, and I was not let down. The book is funny, smart, and ...an excellent blend of both wit and mild historical/fictional accuracy [creating] a very entertaining, read that I feel I could easily recommend to anyone"
- M. Meylikhov, Multiversity Comics

"One of the most endearing bromances in history was that between comedic writer Mark Twain & quirk-prone inventor Nikola Tesla. One was born under Haley’s comet; the other a lightning storm. Both were destined to be great friends. Neither Twain nor Tesla are depicted often in comics, even less so together. The Five Fists revolves around the duo’s endeavors to sell world peace, which is great, because it almost happened."
- Desmond White, Sequart

"To Science! And to Showmanship!"

- Mark Twain, in Five Fists of Science.

"Sometimes ideas intrigue me so much that I make them without thinking, 'What is this for?' This was one of them. A mistake...Too Powerful..."

- Nikola Tesla, on his invention to end all war, in
The Five Fists of Science

"The five fists of science can bring about world peace"

Mark twain wants to save the world!
