WESTWARD, HO!

  • Many of the pioneers moving west-ward were farmers
  • During the trip to the west, the pioneers had to always have their two most valued possessions, a gun, and an axe
  • The Spanish allowed the Americans to use the lower Mississippi River for crop and market reasons

THE FRENCH THREAT

  • For a few years, the Spanish allowed the Americans to use the Mississippi, but in 1802, the Spanish changed and no longer allowed American goods to be transported past New Orleans
  • Spain and France had secretly agreed to tranfer the Louisiana Purchase to France

NAPOLEAN AND SANTO DOMINGO

  • Santo Domingo was renamed Haiti
  • When the French tried to overrun Santo Domingo, they lost

AN EXPANDING NATION

  • A french official told the U.S. that the Louisiana Purchase was for sale
  • Livinston and Monroe closed the deal of the Louisiana Purchase, even though they did not have authorization

THE LEWIS AND CLARK EXOEDITION

  • The expedition served many purposes including surveying the land and finding new plants and animals
  • The expedition also let the U.S. find and map the fabled Northwest Passage
  • Meriwether Lewis was Thomas Jefferson's secretary

A FEDERALIST PLAN TO SECEDE

  • A group of federalists in Massachusetts planed to secede from the Union
  • New England would become the Northwest Confederacy

HAMILTON AND BURR DUEL

  • A duel is where two people take ten steps away from each other, then turn and shoot at each other, eventually, someone will be dead (Hamilton was killed)
  • Dueling was illegal and still is
