HOW FRANKENSTEIN RELATES TO THE WOMAN IN BLACK

  • They're both gothic novels which is literature that refers to a frightening manner.
  • They both create a suspense with the setting. The setting of both novels are dark and mysterious.
  • Both of the protagonist have physiological damage from things that happen in the novels.
  • In both books a character wants revenge. In this book the Woman in Black wants revenge.

  • The book is set in the 1920's.
  • It takes place in a small town in London called Crythin Gifford.
  • The setting creates a depressed and dark mood
  • The Eel Marsh House is where most of the story takes place.
  • The house is surrounded by the sea and has a cemetery in the backyard.

CHARACTERS

  • The protagonist is Arthur Kipps, he is a lawyer and a widower with a young son that takes a job to gather information of a recently deceased woman
  • The antagonist is The Woman in Black, she is an angry ghost that wants revenge on all children.
  • Stella- Arthur's deceased wife.
  • Mr. Bentley- Arthur's boss who sends him on the trip.
  • Keckwick- driver of the pony trap who takes Arthur to and from Eel Marsh House.

MORE CHARACTERS

  • Sam Daily- He's know as a country bumpkin. He becomes Arthur's ally and watches out for him.
  • Mr. Jerome- a man who is very afraid of the Woman in Black. He won't tell Arthur anything about the ghost.
  • Esmè- Arthur's second wife.

CONFLICT

  • Internal-Arthur doesn't know what the woman wants
  • External-Sam Daily won't allow someone to help him do his work
  • Internal- Arthur hears a scream but doesn't know if he should help
  • Internal- Arthur sees the ghost at there cemetery and tries to decide if he should confront her or not

ARTHUR KIPPS IS A YOUNG SOLICITOR WHO'S HEADING OFF ON A BUSINESS TRIP

  • Rising action is when Arthur gets to Crythin Gifford, he encounters a lot of fog and uneasy townsfolk
  • Climax- Arthur discovers the Woman in Black is actually a ghost.
  • Falling action- Arthur discovers the ghost is angry and wants revenge because of the death of her child.
  • Resolution- Arthur marries a few years later and has a kid.
  • He sees the ghost again and the family gets into a terrible car accident and die.
