SYMPTOMS

  • Limping
  • Pain or stiffness in the hip, groin thigh and the knee
  • Little movement in the hip.
  • May not be able to tell where it hurts
  • Pain can occur while being physically active

  • X-rays
  • MRI (magnetic resonance imaging)
  • Bone scan
  • TREATMENT
  • Physical therapy
  • Crutches
  • Traction
  • Casts
  • *surgeries are available

WHO GETS IT

  • Children between the ages 4 and 8
  • Most common in boys

FACTS

  • 10 to 12% get it in both hips but not at the same time.
  • Does not usually occur in African Americans.
  • Ages 8-9 have a higher chance of permanent damage.
