Blandin IFM Project

  • Improves forest management on more than 175,000 acres of mixed native hardwood forest in northern Minnesota
  • Implements Smart Forestry(SM) practices that result in longer rotations and increased carbon storage
  • Includes the largest conservation easement in Minnesota
  • Registered with American Carbon Registry

The Blandin forest protects water resources for local communities including: 60,000 acres of wetlands; 33 miles of lake and pond shoreline; and 151 miles of streams.

2017: 140 students, 125 attendees to 2 workshops
The Blandin forest supports education and research. In 2017: 140 students visited the project area; 125 people attended ecosystem silviculture and forest management for wildlife habitat workshops; and 2 research studies on bird and hydrology effects of forest management are taking place.

30 miles of trout streams, 47 species of birds
The Blandin Forest protects critical wildlife habitat: 30 miles of state designated trout streams; 47 species of birds (2016 count in 640-acre research area); and 779 total number of birds (2016 count in 640-acre research area).

Rare species such as the northern long-eared bat and the golden winged warbler can be found there.

46,830 seedlings given away (2017), 187,197 acres of public access
Blandin provides forest access and resources to local communities. In 2017:
56 firewood permits were provided; 46,830 seedlings were given away; and 187,597 acres of public access provided for recreational use.
