Occupational Therapy

By: Danielle Foster

Occupational Therapy or "Moral Treatment" has been around since the 1700's.

Occupational Therapy started originally as helping the mentally ill patients learn how to function in society. Now, it's for the physically/mentally troubled that need help learning how to do every day activities.

In the Great Depression era, it was hard finding a job as an Occupational Therapist because of the low budget. Then when the 1940-60's came, a lot of OT's were needed to help the wounded soldiers.

Phillipe Pinel and William Tuke both believed that the mentally ill should not be locked up, but treated to help be a part of society. They believed by using literature, music, exercise, and being kind to these individuals would be able to function in society better.

Occupational Therapy is going to increase by 27% by 2024 because of the "baby boomer" generation starting to get older. With this big growth that means also a lot more competition to get spots in colleges and places hiring.

In the future the field will become more and more advanced with new technology and more cures being found for certain mental and physical disabilities.

An Occupational Therapist helps children and adults be able to do daily tasks in their lives. By helping them they are also helping the caregiver.

This career is important in our society because we need to help each other become stronger and more independent. By just doing that we are improving not only that person's life but their family as well.

Being an OT would be a good fit for me because I am very caring and I always motivate people to do their best and try to be their best. By being able to help everybody of all ages be better and become independent would be a great feeling and accomplishment.
