FACTS:

  • Born: December 31, 1491
  • Grew up in St. Malo, Brittany, France
  • Married to Catherine Des Granches (May 1520) with no children
  • He was a French explorer
  • He then died on September 1, 1556 in Limoilou

FIRST VOYAGE

  • 1534: king of France gave a task to Cartier to discover islands where it is said there is a large amount of gold and other riches to be found
  • Cartier brought together 2 ships 30 men for each ship
  • Soon he reaches Newfoundland and sails on to Labrador
  • This allowed France to claim that would become Canada

CONT.

  • Then sailed 1000 miles up St. Lawrence River
  • He has to lead an expedition to the northern lands

SECOND VOYAGE

  • French king then gives him another task to his second voyage to reach Iroquoian capital of Stadacona on may 19 1535
  • He left with three ships and 110 men
  • Sailed up st Laurence river
  • Seized Iroquois chiefs and travel back to France

THIRD VOYAGE

  • May 23, 1541: sailed with five ships
  • Goals: to find the kingdom of Saguenay
  • To establish a settlement along the St. Lawrence River
  • The third voyage was then to New world in 1541
