He was drafted by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1955.

December 23, 1972 there was a massive earthquake in Nicaragua.

Clemente asked people for donations of money and supplies.

Clemente decided to deliver the supplies himself. December 31, 1972 he boarded a plane bound for Nicaragua. Tragically that planned crashed.

The spirit of Clemente lives on today. Written on this statue of Clemente are the words
"The Great One". This is how he will always be remembered
