THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN INTRODUCTION

  • Began with the British concern of the war in the north
  • British wanted to crush the rebels, so they looked towards the south
  • The south had many loyalist but also patriots
  • The war split into two sides the loyalists, and the patriots

THE BATTLE OF CAMDEN

  • The Battle of Camden was a loss for the patriots.
  • This was because their leader,Horatio Gates refused to take wise advice that ended up being a big mistake and a contribution their defeat.
  • Another reason they lost was because the soldiers were unprepared and inexperienced
  • Therefore making the patriot lose and Britain became victorious

BUFORD'S MASSACRE

  • Colonial Buford's received orders to March to Camden,take their weapons,and retreat to North Carolina.
  • General Cornwallis heard of what Buford was doing and took his troops, led by tarleton, and went to cut the patriots off.
  • Tarleton offered a truce,but Buford rejected, though once in battle Buford tried to surrender but his surrender was declined.
  • The British won and more than 100 patriots were killed during battle

GUERILLA WARFARE

  • Guerrilla warfare was a smaller group of soldiers who fight against larger armies
  • It features the use of ambushes, hit‐and‐run raids, and sabotage
  • Leaders like francis Marion and Nathaniel Greene also used some guerrilla warfare during the American Revolution
  • Guerrilla warfare was used to frustrate the British

THE BATTLE OF KINGS MOUNTAIN

  • Lord Cornwallis lead the victory of the patriots in the battle of kings mountain
  • Major Patrick Ferguson challenged them to lay down there weapons or suffer the consequences
  • In response patriots went to war against the British on kings mountain
  • Ferguson was shot in battle and some of his men surrendered

THE BATTLE OF COWPENS

  • The battle of Cowpens was a victory for the patriots let by General Daniel Morgan against the British forces led by major tarleton
  • It was the Turning point in the rebel against British control
  • Their leader, Tarleton, escaped but Morgan's troops took on his army
