PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE BLACK DEATH

MY PERSON IS GOING TO BE A SERF/ FARMER

WHAT LIFE AS A FARMER IS LIKE DURING THE BLACK DEATH TIME?

  • In the morning I wake up, I go to the farm where I work with 50 other people. We weed and get food for the village.
  • For some reason lately people have not been coming to work. I think this is a problem because there is a lot of work that seeds to be done and if people are sick and missing we can’t make as much money.
  • 2 days later: this is so weird there are only about 15 people left working, there must be a nasty flu going around.
  • The next day: I came to work this morning and I have the bums like my friend had.

  • 3 days later: ok, where is everyone! It is just me, and 5 other people. There is one man here working but he has these weird bumps on his skin. I think we should send him home.
  • The next day: I came to work this morning and I have the bums like my friend had.

IDENTIFY AND EXPLAIN HOW THE BLACK DEATH AFFECTED LIFE FOR YOUR PERSON

  • Many farm workers and serfs had died so the servers would have asked for a lot more money to work but they had to work a lot more and harder.

HOW DID THE BLACK DEATH IMPACT THE FEUDAL SYSTEM IN WESTERN EUROPE

  • Well, important people like kings and queens at the top of the pyramid were very important and if they got the Black Death they would be in big trouble. Something Queen Elizabeth did at this time would order anyone arriving at Windsor from London was to be hung. This is how she would have not got infected.
  • If you were at the bottom of the pyrimid such as a serf you would get infected so quickly and it would spread so fast because you would be around a lot of people working all the time. If you had it and you had children they would get it so quickly.

WHAT WAS THE POSITIVE CONSEQUENCE OF A NEGATIVE EVENT

  • Even though the serfs were making a lot of money the people paying them were losing money and going bankrupt because they were asking for so much money.

WHAT WAS THE NEGATIVE CONSEQUENCE OF A POSITIVE EVENT?

  • Lots of slaves and farmers were dying, but that meant that the ones who were still alive would ask for a lot more money to be paid for there work.

WHAT WAS THE BLACK DEATH?

  • The plague or also known as the Black Death was a disease spread by rats that caused many deaths during the 14th, 15th, 16th centuries.
  • The Black Death first arrived in cargo ships that were arriving with trades and goods, these ships had rats on them and the rats had flies which would spread very easily.

TYPES OF PLAGUE

  • Spitting plague: cough and spit blood, gone in 3 days
  • Bubonic Plague: causes huge boil-like lumps called buboes. You would die in 5 days. Some people who can recover, but not very likely to happen.
  • These are the two types of plague.

CURES

  • There was no cure for the Black Death, doctors had tried to cure the people but nothing could save them. They tried many different things to save them: sitting in sewers, sitting in a room with two enormous fires beside you. But nothing worked.

HOW IT SPREAD

  • The Black Death spread very easily, all someone had to do was sneeze or cough and they had been infected. It was so hard to not get it.
